The term aromatherapy has been coined by a French chemist Rene-Maurice Gatefosse at the beginning of the 20th century. While experimenting in his laboratory, Gatefosse accidentally burnt his hand and put it in a bowl with lavender essential oil. To his surprise the burn healed much faster and didn’t scar the hand. This fact intrigued Gatafosse and made him look closer at the properties of this essential oil. He carried out a research and published his findings in a book entitled “Aromatherapy”.
Thyme and lavender essential oils were used during the Second World War to treat gunshot wounds and to sterilize chirurgical instruments.
Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy. It approaches a patient as a one integrated entity which can be compared to the medicine of Far East. The aim of aromatherapy is to improve the overall condition of the organism through balancing its natural immune powers.
It is amazing how much it can help some people.
